The 7-Day Loan Collection are items in high demand. They are distinguished by a red spine label with the words '7 Day Loan'. These materials are available only to UTS students and staff. f

 

A

Abstract
A summary of an article or paper, often appearing at the beginning of the paper. An abstract field may also be available in some indexes.

ADT
The Australasian Digital Theses Program is a project to create a national collaborative distributed database of digitised theses produced at Australasian universities. More information: Digital Theses.

Aggregator
There are two meanings for this definition:
1. A bibliographic service that provides online access to the digital full-text of periodicals published by different publishers.
2. You can use an aggregator that automatically downloads the latest updates from your selected RSS feeds to your desktop or web browser.

Almanac(s)
An almanac is an annual publication containing tabular information in a particular field or fields often arranged according to the calendar.

Alumni
Refers to students who have graduated from University. Members of UTS:Alumni may register for one of several types of Library services. More information: Community >> Alumni

Annotated bibliography
An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited and provide a foundation for further research.

Annotation
Unlike an abstract, which is an objective description or summary of a work, an annotation is a critical or subjective evaluation of a piece of work, usually included in a bibliography or citation.

APA System
The APA (American Psychological Association) System of referencing uses the author-date method of citation. More information: Bell Program: APA Reference Guide.

Archives
Valuable records of organisations and individuals that have been selected for indefinite retention on the basis of their continuing value for legal, administrative, financial or historical research purposes. Archives usually house materials of an historic nature.

Article
A piece of writing on a specific topic that forms an independent part of a periodical publication such as a journal, serial, magazine, or newspaper.

The Ask a Librarian service provides various ways to 'contact us' for assistance.  

Audio Library Tours
Audio Library Tours are a set of audio files that you can download to your mp3 player so you can listen to a verbal tour of the Library as you walk around the Listening Points. They are available in English and Chinese.

Audiovisual materials
Materials such as DVDs, videos, slides, CDs and tapes.

Authentication
A site that requires authentication needs to confirm that the user is authorised to enter. UTS staff and students should use the username and password of their activated UTS email account to confirm their identity.

Author
The person(s) or group responsible for the intellectual or artistic content of a work. The person who has written or created the published material i.e. book, book chapter, journal article, report, dissertation or web page etc.

AXIS
AXIS is the University Library's newsletter published a few times a year.

Baya Ng'ara Nura (Language of the Eora Nation)
The Baya Ng'ara Nura* Learning Place is a welcoming space within the Library where Indigenous students can learn together and with other students. Baya Ng’ara Nura means Learning Place - in the language of the Eora Nation, these words mean Place, Read, Listen, Hear and Think.

Bell Program
The Bell Program stands for Being an Effective Lifelong Learner. It comprises a collection of online self-learning modules designed to enhance students' skills in project management, teamwork, ethics, academic writing and speaking, referencing, mathematics and information skills.

Bibliography
A list of citations that usually appears at the end of a paper, article, book chapter, book, dissertation or report that have been consulted in the composition of the publication. See the Referencing Resources page for further information. A bibliography can also be a book consisting entirely of citations usually in a specific subject area.

Blake Library (City Campus)
The Blake Library is located at Corner Quay Street and Ultimo Road, Haymarket. Also see George Muir Library (Kuring-gai Campus). More information: Campus Libraries.

BONUS+
BONUS+ is a resource-sharing project that enables the lending of selected library material among the staff and students of: Deakin University, the University of Ballarat, the University of Melbourne, the University of Newcastle, the University of Technology Sydney and Victoria University.

Boolean operators
Boolean operators are definitions that help you to either narrow or broaden your searches in library catalogues and databases. They are the words 'and', 'or', 'not', typed between your search definitions. AND requires all definitions appear in a record. OR retrieves records with either definition. NOT excludes definitions.

Boolean searching
A method of combining two or more search definitions to increase or restrict the amount found.

Bulletin
The Bulletin is a monthly email providing regular updates on developments to Library services, resources and facilities.

C

Call Number
Libraries organise their collections by subject. These subjects are represented by letters and numbers or 'Call Numbers'. Every item has a call number which indicates where the item is located in the Library. This number is based on the Dewey Decimal System.

Catalogue
The catalogue is a list of materials available in a particular collection, arranged in a systematic order. The UTS Library Catalogue lists all the materials held by the UTS Library including books, journals (including e-journals) and video recordings and can be accessed online.

Catalyst
Catalyst is an interactive online package to assist all UTS students with basic information skills training. It is specifically designed to take students through the basic steps of researching, documenting, writing and submitting a piece of academic writing or research.

Citation
Citations can also be called 'references' and are listed in a bibliography or reference list usually found at the end of the publication. A citation normally includes author, title, place of publication, publisher and year, if the item is a book. If the item is an article, it includes author, title of the article, title of the periodical, volume number, page and date. Also see references.

Citation Index
A bibliographic index that indicates how many times the work of one author has been referred to, or cited, by another author, and where. How many times a document is cited by other writers is an indication of its importance.

Citation Linker
Citation Linker enables a specific search request to be submitted directly to SFX. Citation Linker is a useful tool for checking on the availability of a particular citation or reference, but is not designed as a general search tool.

Client Services Charter
The Client Service Charter outlines the University Library's services and standards.

Closed Reserve

Community Members
Students or staff of other universities, TAFE, high schools or other eligible members of the community. More information: Community

Copyright is the legal protection given to an author's intellectual rights which protect them against unauthorised copying of their work. All UTS staff and students are obliged by law to comply with copyright legislation. More information: UTSWeb Copyright Statement and Copyright at UTS.

Database
An organised body of related information. Also see electronic database and index or the Library's Databases.

Descriptor(s)
Definitions assigned to database records to place them within categories.

Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
Devised by Melvil Dewey in 1876 and probably the most widely used classification system in the world today. The Dewey Decimal Classification system is used by UTS Library to organise titles by subject area on the Library shelves. The system divides knowledge into ten main fields, in 000s-900s, which are further broken down in a hierarchy of increasing specificity. Each area of knowledge has its own number range. Digital Library
Collection of texts, images, etc., encoded so as to be stored, retrieved, and read by computer.

Digital Resources Register (DRR)
The Digital Resources Register is a register of materials used for online teaching at UTS.

Digital Thesis - Theses
An electronic or digital version of a thesis that you can read online. More information: Digital Theses.

Dissertation
Another definition for a thesis.

Document Delivery Service
A service whereby items are obtained for students and staff from other libraries. These items can be supplied by a UTS campus library other than your home campus see InterCampus Document Delivery (ICDD) or from other libraries external to UTS see InterLending Service.

Due Date
This is the date the item you have on loan is due to be returned to the Library.

ebooks
see Electronic Books.

Editor
The person responsible for preparing or assembling a work or collection of works or articles for publication. They are not considered to be the author.

E-journals
Electronic versions of printed journals that can be viewed online. E-journals can be accessed through the Library Catalogue.

Electronic Books
An electronic or digital version of a book that you can read online.

Electronic Database
A comprehensive collection of information in electronic form and organised for quick retrieval. Also see database and index.

Electronic Resource
A publication in digital format which must be stored and read on a computer device

ELSSA Centre (English Language Study Skills Assistance)
The ELSSA Centre provides academic language and literacy support to students and staff at UTS.

EndNote
EndNote is bibliographic management software designed to manage your citations/references. It allows you to store your citations/references in a 'library' and organise them into a reference list or bibliography in a specific referencing style.

EndNote
A style of citing that places a number in the body of the text. This number refers to a citation listed at the end of the text. Also known as Vancouver style.

Enquiries and Loans Desk
A desk where Library staff can provide you with information about the Library's resources and services and where you go to borrow library material such as books and videorecordings. There is an Enquiries and Loans Desk located in each campus Library.

ePrint
A digital version of a research document (usually a journal article, but could also be a thesis, conference paper, book chapter, or a book) that is accessible online, whether from a local Institutional, or a central (subject- or discipline-based) Digital Repository.

Equitable access
Equitable access means that all individuals have similar capacity (with assistance when needed) and similar opportunity (with assistance when needed) to make use of necessary resources, services, or programs of similar quality, regardless of any barriers posed by social, geographical, ethnocultural/linguistic, gender or socioeconomic factors, or physical, intellectual, cognitive, emotional or other challenges.

eReadings
A collection of electronic documents that can be accessed via the Library Catalogue or Subject Resources on the UTS Library homepage.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions - a common abbreviation on the Web.

Fields
Portion of a reference or unit record representing a specific item of information, such as the author, title etc.

Footnote
A footnote is a note of text placed at the bottom of a page in a book or document. The note comments on and may cite a reference for part of the main body of text.

Free text
The use of natural language in information retrieval.

Full-text
The complete article or chapter is available online.

Group Study Room
Group study rooms are provided at each campus for use by 3 or more UTS students. These may be booked for a 2 hour period only at the Enquiries desk or by phone. More information: Venue Hire.

Harvard style
Harvard is a system (the Author-Date system) of referencing. More information: Bell Program: Harvard (UTS).

Holdings
When speaking about a library or a collection in a UTS Library, the holdings are the total of all material held. When speaking about an individual publication, the copies owned by the library, expressed as an issue number/date range and including the format (e.g. Time Australia magazine: Vol. 1 (1986)-v. 3 (1989) on microfiche; 1990 + hard copy).

I

Impact Factor
The measure of the frequency with which the 'average article' in a journal has been cited. The impact factor will help you evaluate a journal’s relative importance, especially when you compare it to others in the same field. It is calculated by dividing the number of current citations to articles published in the two previous years by the total number of articles published in the two previous years.

Imprint
A note on a book's title page or its reverse or at the end of the book, giving the publisher's or printer's name, time and place of publication.

Index
Systematic guide to the contents of a file, document, or group of documents.
1. An alphabetical list at the end of a book or periodical which gives page references to where names and subjects can be found.
2. An alphabetical list of definitions (eg. Author, keyword) providing points of access to search a database. Also see Electronic database and Database.

Indigenous
Native to a place or area, originating in and characterising a particular region or country.

Information Literacy
The ability to define problems in definitions of information needs, to locate, evaluate, and apply information. More information: Information Literacy.

Information Resources
Source of information, eg book, journal, website, video.

Information Services Librarians
Professional Library staff who help with your information needs.

Information Skills
The definition 'information skill' is the ability to find, sort out, evaluate and use all sources of information. Users need to learn to judge the information gathered. It is up to the users to distinguish what information is worth reviewing and what is not. More information: Information Skills.

Intellectual Property
Umbrella definition for original ideas of all sorts: inventions, literary and artistic works, images, designs, slogans, etc. Creators are protected from unauthorised use of their ideas by Copyright. Also see Copyright.

InterCampus Document Delivery (ICDD)
The Inter-campus Document Delivery (ICDD) service can supply material held at a UTS campus library other than your home library. ICDD items can be sent to, and collected from, your home library only. Check the Library's website to see if you are eligible for this service. See Associate Members and Membership Categories for UTS Members.

InterLending Service
The InterLending Service provides access to materials that cannot be found in a UTS Library and are not available via BONUS. At UTS, this service is currently limited to staff and students (excluding undergraduate students) for educational or research purposes.

InterLibrary Loan (ILL)
A cooperative arrangement between libraries, whereby users can borrow items from other libraries within the system. See InterLending Service.

International and Cultural News Centre (ICNC)
The ICNC is located at the Blake Library (City Campus) Level 2, and is designed to help students keep up with overseas news and practise their language skills. More Information: International and Cultural News Centre.

ISBN
International Standard Book Number: An internationally agreed on standard number that identifies a book uniquely.

ISSN
International Standard Serial Number: An internationally agreed on standard number that identifies a serial/journal publication (including electronic serials) uniquely.

Journal
Publication containing articles, usually multiauthored, which is published regularly as part of an ongoing series. Journals may also be called serials or periodicals. Also see Peer-reviewed journal.

Journal Databases
A collection of records, describing journal articles, that can be searched by computer. Online library catalogues and electronic journal indexes are all databases. More information: Databases select 'Journal Databases' then 'Find Resources'.

Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning (Jumbunna IHL)
Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning is an academic, research and support centre. Jumbunna IHL's role is to contribute to Australia's educational and social development by increasing UTS staff and students' awareness of Indigenous Australian cultures and associated issues. Justice of the Peace (JP)
A person appointed (or reappointed) to the Office of Justice of the Peace in and for the State of New South Wales. More information: Lawlink NSW: JPs Register

Kit
A multi-part item.

Learning Commons
Area located on Level 2, Blake Library (City Campus), and Level 4, George Muir Library (Kuring-gai Campus), offering dynamic spaces designed to promote both group and individual learning activity. LibQUAL+™ Survey

Library blog
Blog created for the UTS Library News & Events. The UTS Library weblog delivers news about the Library's services, resources, facilities and events to the UTS community and Library clients.

Library catalogue
The Library Catalogue is a systematic record of all the resources in a library. At UTS the Library Catalogue is online and searchable via a web browser.

Library of Congress subject headings
A set list (thesaurus) of subject headings maintained by the Library of Congress for use in library catalogue records.

Literature Review
A literature review is an essay or is part of the introduction to an essay, research report, or thesis. It provides an overview and critical analysis of relevant published scholarly articles, research reports, books, theses etc on the topic or issue to be investigated.

Literature Search
A systematic and exhaustive search for published material (whether in print or online) on a specific topic

Magazines
Publication containing popular articles. Also see Journal.

Manuscript
An unpublished printed or hand-written work.

MARC
Machine-Readable Cataloging: A system in which cataloging records are prepared in a format that enables the computer to recognise the elements and manipulate them for various purposes.

Markets Forum
Public seminars organised by and held in the city campus library throughout the year. More information: Markets Forum.

Membership
See the Membership webpage for the various membership categories.

Microfiche
A sheet of film containing a number of microimages.

Microfilm
A length of film containing a number of microimages.

Microform
A generic definition for any medium bearing microimages, e.g. microfilm and microfiche.

Missing
Status given to Library items that cannot be found in the Library collection.

Monograph
A single written item, and usually used to mean a book.

MyLibrary
You can manage your borrowing record online at MyLibrary where all your borrowing information is gathered together. You can check when items you have borrowed are due for return, renew items, check any Hold Requests or Bookings you may have, modify your email address for Library notices, and more.

Off-campus Access
Access to Library resources from a site other than a UTS campus, e.g. from home or office. Requires you to login using your UTS webmail account username and password. More information: Off-campus staff and students.

On Loan
This means that the Library item has been borrowed by another person. A due date will show when the item is due back in the Library.

On Order
The item has been ordered from a supplier but has not yet been received by the Library.

Online Catalogue
see OPAC

Online Database
Database accessible by a network (generally the internet). At UTS, access to databases is provided by Library subscriptions.

Online Tutorials
Online Tutorials are sets of examples and exercises available online and are designed to help you learn how to use library resources.

OPAC
Online Public Access Catalogue - where information is stored on a server, which can be accessed via a remote definitioninal. Also see Library Catalogue. Or go to the Library Catalogue.

Overdue
A library item which is out on loan and has passed its due date. Once an item is overdue a fine will apply.

Patents
Patents are a set of exclusive rights granted for a fixed period of time to make, use or sell a process or invention. More information: Intellectual Property, Patents and Copyright.

Peer Review
Peer review is a formal process whereby articles submitted to a journal or conference are sent to several established scholars in that field of study. These reviewers may suggest improvements before deciding if the article should be published or included in the conference.

Peer-reviewed journal
A journal containing articles that are reviewed and approved by experts in the same subject area as the author before they can be published. Similar definitions are 'refereed journal', 'scholarly journal' and 'academic journal'. Also see Journal.

Periodical
See Journal.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the taking, using, and passing off as your own, the ideas or words of another. This is the case even when you cite the source in the body of your text or in your references, or both. More information: Bell Program: Plagiarism.

Plate
A leaf containing illustrative matter, with or without explanatory text, that does not form part of either the preliminary or the main sequences of pages or leaves.

Preprint
A print (usually electronic) of an article not yet published. This allows authors to quickly circulate current results to their scholarly community for feedback.

Publisher
A company or person that makes publications available.

A journal or magazine that is published four times a year, usually every three months.

Rare Books
The UTS Library Rare Book Collection consists of individual items of relevance to the University's teaching and research interests and a small number of thematic collections. Particularly noteworthy is the Children's Literature Collection held at Kuring-gai Campus Library. More information: Rare Books Policy.

Recall(s)
A Recall is when another borrower places a Request on an item that you have out on loan. When this happens, a recall notice will be sent to you by email, with a new ‘due by date’ by which the item must be returned to the Library. Recalls allow for flexible and fair sharing of our resources.

Reciprocal borrower
UTS staff and students can borrow in person from other libraries where UTS has a reciprocal borrowing agreement. More information: Membership at other libraries.

Refereed
See Peer review.

Refereed Journal
See Peer-reviewed journal.

Reference (citation)
See Citation.

Reference Collection
In the UTS Reference Collections you will find 'reference' books such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, directories, atlases and handbooks. These books cannot be borrowed. The Reference Collection holds specialised publications which are usually consulted for brief facts or as an entry point to other literature.

Reference List
A list of books, journal articles, websites etc that appears at the end of an assignment or publication and gives the full details of the sources of information that have been 'cited' or referred to in the content.

Reference Service
Providing answers to users' questions, in person or by telephone or computer.

Reference(s)
Bibliographical description of a book or periodical article sufficient to identify and find the item. Also see Citation.

Referencing
Referencing, or citing, is the practice of acknowledging sources of information and ideas used in an assignment or publication. There are various styles of referencing, e.g. Harvard, APA. More information: Referencing and Writing.

RefWorks
RefWorks (CSA) is a web-based bibliographic software designed to store your references and create a bibliography in the Harvard (UTS) or APA 5th reference style. You can type your references into RefWorks, import references directly from the UTS Library catalogue or export journal references from most of our journal databases.

Renew
To extend the loan period of an item that you have borrowed. You can renew items using MyLibrary.

Reprint
1. A new printing of an item made from the original type image, commonly by photographic methods. The reprint may reproduce the original exactly, or it may contain minor but well-defined variations.
2. A new printing with substantially unchanged text.

Request(s)
A Request is a reservation that you place on an item that is on loan to another borrower or available at another campus. You can request books from the General and 7-day loan collections.

Research Help Desk
The Research Help Desk provides assistance with finding books, using databases to find journal articles and help with assignments and research. More information: Help Desk Opening Hours.

Reserve Collection
The Reserve Collection is a collection of high-demand materials placed there by UTS lecturers to ensure equitable access to their students. Items in this collection are either available from the Closed Reserve, at the Enquiries and Loans Desk, or as eReadings.

Returns
The due date for returning your loans is printed on the loans slip presented to you when you borrowed the items. After this date, the item becomes overdue and a fine will apply. You can view your own library record at MyLibrary, this will show you what items you have on loan and when they are due back. More information: Returns.

Rovers - [Missing from Facilities Menus - Alex]
The team of Rovers provide point-of-need assistance to students throughout the Library. They can assist with logging on to computers, activating email, IT troubleshooting, passwords and printing, searching the Library catalogue, navigating the Library website, directions within the Library, locating material on the shelves etc.

RSS Feeds
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a family of Web feed formats used to publish content which is updated frequently.
An RSS document, also known as a "feed," "web feed," or "channel," contains a title, some descriptive content, and a URL that links back to the original content or website for more information. Insert link

Scholarly Journal

Scholars' Centre
A dedicated centre in the Library for UTS postgraduate research students and staff providing easy access to the full-range of Library services and resources and a quiet study environment conducive to the research process. More information: Scholars' Centre.

Search Strategy
Plan of a search for information. The plan includes the selection of key definitions and synonyms used in the formulation of a query to search databases, catalogues, or the internet for information. More information: Catalyst - Design Your Search Strategy.

Selected full text
Some databases do not contain the entire text for every article from an online journal. Only some articles are complete.

Self-service loans machines
Machines that enable you to borrow items quickly by scanning the barcode on your UTS ID card and the barcode on the item to be borrowed. Books and books with accompanying CDs/DVDs may be checked out in this way but other items should be taken to the Loans desk to be checked out. More information: How to borrow.

Serial
See Journal.

Series
A group of separate items related to one another by the fact that each item bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole. The individual items may or may not be numbered.

SFX
SFX stands for "special effects". It is a piece of software that searches for full text access to articles. If you find an article that is not available in full text, you can click on the SFX symbol and it will try to locate another database containing the full text of the article. Shelfwise
Knowledge of the arrangement of books and other items in the Library and the numbering system, Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme, used to create the call number that identifies each item. More information: Shelfwise.

Sorting Shelves
Recently returned items are placed on red sorting shelves before they are shelved at their permanent location. Check these shelves if you can't find an item that the catalogue shows should be for loan.

Special Collections
As well as the major collections there are Special Collections which may reflect particular subject areas.

Special Needs
UTS Library aims to provide the assistance needed by students and staff with either a temporary or permanent disability to ensure equitable access to Library resources and support in developing independent research skills. More information: Services for Special Needs staff and students

Statement of Reconciliation
The UTS Statement of Reconciliation is to reassert an ongoing commitment by the University to provide educational opportunities in the higher education sector for Indigenous people and, through research and education, the restoration of their histories and knowledge systems.

As part of this ongoing commitment, the University will strive to build an educational environment that is genuinely inclusive of the Indigenous people.

Student Satisfaction Survey
UTS Student Satisfaction Survey collects student feedback on overall performance of the University's services and learning environment. (Sample based).

Study Guide(s)
Study Guides will give you a quick introduction to the best resources in a subject area. They list useful catalogue search strategies, journal databases, web directories and reference material.

Subject Heading
A word or phrase assigned to an item that describes the contents of material. UTS Library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

Subject Readers
Subject Readers are also referred to as Course Notes or Course Readers. These are made available to UTS students to use in the Library or borrow for 7 days.

Subject Resources
The Subject Resources webpage can search a variety of subject resources (eg closed reserve, eReadings, exam papers), using a single search carried out by subject number or name.

SuperSearch
SuperSearch is an online search facility (gateway) which allows you to search across the Library's information resources.

Thesaurus
A group or classification or synonyms or a list of descriptors (subject headings). Often publishers of periodical indexes/abstracts or other databases produce a thesaurus or list of preferred or 'controlled' subject headings.

Thesis
A thesis, also sometimes called a dissertation, is a lengthy research work written to test a theory or proposition. The plural of thesis is theses. More information: Theses

Truncation
Truncation is the shortening of a search definition that allows you to search the "root" form of a word with all its different endings.

Visual Library Tours
Visual Library Tours are a collection of still images (photographs) guiding you through the campus Library's via the Library Website.

Volume
A part of a journal or book series. Volume numbers of journals usually increase each year and each volume may have several numbered 'issues' in a year.

Wildcard symbol
The wildcard symbol is a character that can be used to replace any single character, either within a word or at the end of a word when you are searching databases. This is used if you are not sure of the exact spelling or wish to widen your search criteria.

The symbol varies with databases, so check the Search Help for the symbol the database uses. For example, in ProQuest databases wom?n searches for woman and women, while organi?ation searches for both organisation and organization.
