New Extended Hours Trial Coming Soon

Endless Summer

Before the 2016 final exams we piloted 24/5 opening hours in the Blake Library. This was done over a six week period and we collected a lot of usage data and feedback from smart card entries, a written survey, regular observations and RateIt comments. This told us that a lot of students left the Library around or before 1am and that not too many stayed all night. Students also requested extended hours on more nights and over a longer period of weeks.

For the Autumn 2017 session we will pilot a different model of extended opening hours lasting for a total of eight weeks from Monday 8 May to Friday 30 June 2017. During this period we will open the Library from 7am to 1am the following morning from Sunday to Friday each week. Saturday opening hours will remain unchanged, i.e. 10am to 6pm. The extended hours are only for UTS students and staff.

We are investigating improved vending machine options to see whether we may be able to provide a wider range of food, but we do need to make sure these facilities are commercially viable. We will open the Level 4 kitchen again and provide coffee, tea, hot chocolate via an automatic machine that will be free of charge. Library and Security staff will be on hand to provide assistance and maintain security.

This will be the first time that we will have extended opening hours like this in the Autumn session, so we will analyse all the data and feedback that we collect and use that to plan our hours for the Spring session in 2017.
