Membership

Library Retrieval System - How it impacts you!UTS staff and students

UTS students and staff are automatically members of the Library.
Use your Student or Staff ID card to access Library services and resources. You are also able to borrow from other Australian Libraries.

Other memberships

Community Membership signups and renewals will only be available Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

Other Library clients have different Library access and borrowing privileges.  

Accounting and Finance Conversion Course

Accounting and Finance Conversion Course (AFCC) students are normally issued with an ID card, which allows swipe access to the City Campus Library.

To access any computers in the Library, use your UTS Webmail login. If you have not activated your UTS Webmail account go to UTS: MyAccount.

Note: Your username login should always have a CPE prefix (e.g. CPE12345). If the ID no. on your card has a GCA prefix (e.g. GCA56789) then replace the GCA with CPE to create your username login i.e. CPE56789.

Please note that you do not have access to the UTS Library databases.  

Borrowing privileges are not included.

You may apply for the Community Borrower (formerly Emerald) membership as a Personal Researcher for a fee of $220 per year or $110 for 6 months (inc. GST). Membership is subject to approval. For further information, see Community > Personal Researchers.

INSEARCH (Language)

Students studying English Language at INSEARCH are able to access the Library. This arrangement does not include borrowing from the Collection, online room booking, or access to the Library computers.

To access the Library, swipe your INSEARCH student card at the Library gates. You do not need to apply for a  Library card.

Law Moot students

UTS Law students who are participating in a Law Moot can arrange upgraded borrowing privileges during the Law Moot. Please contact the Business and Law team to organise this. 

Your Student ID card functions as your Library card - please present it each time you borrow.

You can borrow the following material:

  • 50 Items from the General Collection at any one time
  • 3 items from the 7-day Loan Collection
  • 1 item from Reserve

The loan period is 8 weeks, with 6 further optional renewals for items from the General Collection.

Items from the 7-day Loan Collection can be renewed 6 times.

Law Moot students also have access to the following services:

  • InterLibrary Loans
  • borrowing of print journals with the permission of the Law librarian
  • no fines for late return of items used for the Moot

    Note: If you do incur fines for late return of an item, they will be waived. See Fines Exemption Form

You can check your borrowing record and renew items online through MyLibrary.

Offshore students

As a UTS student studying overseas, you can access the Library's electronic resources and many special Library services. To access electronic resources, you need to have obtained a UTS student card. Once you have this card, you can log in with your UTS Webmail account details. If you don’t have a student card, you should print out the Student ID card Application - Distant Education mode Students and send it in as per the instructions.

Short Course students

As a UTS Short Course student, UTS Library will help you achieve maximum value from your course by providing the study materials that you need to enhance your learning experience.

Registration

Registration for borrowing is available to students enrolled in courses of 2 weeks duration or longer. Payment options are EFTPOS or cheque. The Library does not accept cash payments.

Normally the price of Library services is not included in Short Course fees, however where a Short Course extends over several weeks they may be included. Please check with your course coordinator if you think this may be the case.

City Campus Library

Note: Entry to the City Campus Library is via swipe card. To enter the Library you will need to register at the desk at the front entrance. Please bring your course confirmation letter, together with a photo ID, e.g. your driver's licence. You can visit the Library up to 10 times in a calendar year at no cost.

UTS Staff ID Cards

How to obtain your UTS Staff ID Card

Your UTS Staff ID Card is your Library borrowing card. Your can obtain this card from Student Centres. City Campus Staff please visit the Building 1 Student Centre on Level 4, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Kuring-Gai campus staff, please visit the Kuring-Gai Student Centre, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. For further information please see UTS ID cards.

INSEARCH staff: You will need to bring a signed authorisation form from INSEARCH stating:

  • your staff ID number
  • the expiry date of your contract

Agency staff

Staff ID numbers for agency staff should be obtained by your faculty or unit when they complete the official process for appointing staff through the UTS Human Resources Unit. For further information, please visit the HRU website at www.hru.uts.edu.au.

Once you have a staff ID number, you will automatically have access to the Library’s online services and resources.

INSEARCH staff

INSEARCH staff have the same borrowing privileges as UTS staff.

To obtain a Library card, you will need to bring a signed authorisation form from INSEARCH stating your staff ID number and the expiry date of your contract. You will also need to show us photo ID. For more information, see UTS Staff ID Cards above.

Nursing clinical associates

Staff ID numbers for nursing clinical associates should be obtained by your faculty or unit when they complete the official process for appointing staff through the UTS Human Resources Unit. For further information, please visit the HRU website at www.hru.uts.edu.au.

Once you have a staff ID number, you will have automatic access to the Library’s online services and resources. 

Off-shore staff

Staff ID numbers for off-shore staff should be obtained by your faculty or unit when they complete the official process for appointing staff through the UTS Human Resources Unit. For further information, please visit the HRU website at www.hru.uts.edu.au.

Once you have a staff ID number, you will have automatic access to the Library’s online services and resources.

Research assistants

Staff ID numbers for research assistants should be obtained by your faculty or unit when they complete the official process for appointing staff through the UTS Human Resources Unit. For further information, please visit the HRU website at www.hru.uts.edu.au.

Once you have a staff ID number, you will have automatic access to the Library’s online services and resources.

Retired staff

This membership applies to:

  • retired academic & support staff
  • Professors Emeriti
  • holders of Honorary Degrees
  • members of UTS Council who have completed a 4 year term or more

Information about Membership Registration

  • Please register online or at the Library Enquiries and Loans Desk. To complete your registration you will need a membership card created for you at the Enquiries and Loans Desk.
  • You will need to provide proof of retirement from the faculty or unit or a letter offering VIP membership from the University Librarian.
  • Membership is for 5 years and is renewable. Membership is free.

Australian and New Zealand Universities (ULANZ)

University Libraries Australia and New Zealand (ULANZ)

ULANZ is a borrowing scheme that allows staff and students from member universities to borrow in person from other universities in Australia and New Zealand. The scheme is a cooperative arrangement between CAUL and CONZUL* member libraries.

*The University of Auckland is not participating in this scheme.

Note: ULANZ  replaced ULA (University Library Australia)  from 1 January 2013.

Day Visitors

Community members engaged in personal research, staff and students from other institutions (including year 11 & 12 High School students), UTS Alumni and UTS Short Course students can become Day Visitors and visit the Library up to 10 times in a calendar year at no cost.

  • Day Visitors can access the Library's collections, copy and scan
  • Day visitors are able to request items from the Library Retrieval System (LRS) for a day loan. Please note these items are for in library use only and must be returned 1 hour before library closing time. To borrow the LRS item(s), please see staff at the Enquiries and Loans Desk with your day visitor pass.
  • computer and printing access is not available to Day Visitors

Official visitors to the Library do not need to register. Library staff may have already completed a Visitor form in advance.

Tour groups should organise visits in advance through the Information Services Manager on Tel +61 2 9514 3423.

Children under 18 accompanying a parent or carer may accompany those with access rights.

Register by completing the Day Visitor Registration form at the Security Desk when you first visit the Library. Once you have registered and provided security with some form of photo ID, you will be issued with a Day Visitor card which must be returned at the end of each visit.

High School Students

High School students who are in Year 11 and 12 are able to access the Library to browse the Collection and photocopy as Day Visitors.

High School Students - Building Connections Program

Free access and borrowing for students from selected high schools

UTS Library provides free access and borrowing privileges to high school students participating in the Library’s Building Connections Program. This program is part of the University's Widening Participation Strategy and is aimed at introducing the UTS Library to students from targeted priority high schools and to high school students from an Indigenous background.

Overseas universities

Day Visitors access is available to staff and students from overseas universities.

Information about Membership Registration

Access and Community Borrower (formerly Emerald) memberships are available only to overseas university staff or research (Masters by Thesis or PhD) students.

To be issued an access card, students will have to show proof of enrolment in Masters by Thesis or PhD programs.

To be issued a borrowing card, students will need to provide a letter of introduction from their academic supervisor, stating they are research students.

  • Please note, Overseas University membership is subject to approval.

Note: Students of Massey University (NZ) are eligible for membership under reciprocal arrangements with the Australian universities ULA scheme and BONUS. Please refer to Australian Universities above.

Personal Researchers

UTS Library welcomes community members engaged in personal research. Those engaged in personal research are able to use the Library as a Day Visitor up to 10 times in a calendar year free of charge.

Applicants for personal research membership should not be enrolled in an award course of study.

Private individuals with a serious research interest may apply for extended access or borrowing at UTS Library.

Computer Access

Access is available to a limited number of computers - these computers will give you onsite access to some of our online databases (where licensing permits). Booking sheets are available near the Research Help Desk. Bookings are for one hour timeslots with a maximum of one per day. Bookings must be made in person.

To use these computers you will need a username and password. These are on your Library card.

Username: ab followed by the last 7 digits of the barcode number
For example - ab0133474

Password: the entire barcode number
For example - 22104000133474

City Campus Library: Computers are located on Level 2 and marked G-01 to G-06.
Kuring-gai Campus Library: Ask at the Enquiries and Loans Desk for available computers.

Access to a computer cannot be guaranteed due to demand.

If you require assistance with accessing computers, take your Library card to the Research Help Desk (City Campus Library) or Enquiries and Loans Desk (Kuring-gai Campus Library).

Day Visitors

Computer access is not available to Day Visitors.

Lost Library cards

Replacement Library cards are available from the Loans & Enquiries Desk for a cost of $30.
Do not share your Library card with others as you are responsible for the items borrowed on your card until they are returned.
