Call Numbers

A Call Number is a way of classifying an item by subject so those items on the same subject can be shelved together. It shows the exact position of the item within the library. The  classification scheme used by the UTS Library is the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme.

All parts of a call number must be taken into account if you are to find the item on the shelf.

The main part of the call number is the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) Number. Then there will be some numbers or letters to identify the particular item.

Here is an example:

Author - I.D. Cresswell
Title -
Terrestrial and marine protected areas in Australia

LOCATION

CALL NO

STATUS

BLAKE LIBRARY
(CITY CAMPUS)

333.78216 CRES

FOR LOAN

In this example 333.78216 is the DDC Number and CRES identifies the particular item.

Note that in the UTS Library there are two systems of Call Numbers. Newer items end in letters. Older items end in numbers.

Items using letters in the call number are filed after items using only numbers.
