EndNote X3 and later are compatible with the latest version of OpenOffice.org Writer for Windows, so when you install EndNote this automatically creates an extra item for EndNote in the top menu bar in Writer. This can also be displayed as a toolbar.

If you are not seeing the toolbar or other EndNote options in OpenOffice writer, try this FAQ from EndNote's website.

Unfortunately, the Macintosh version of EndNote is not compatible with OpenOffice. EndNote is apparently working on this at the moment (March 2011), but they say it is not a high priority. You should contact EndNote's technical support if you wish to encourage EndNote to speed this up.
