In EndNote, go to Edit, Preferences, Display Fields (in a Mac: EndNote [Version], Preferences, Display Fields). Use drop down menus to change Unused to Record Number, then click OK. Back in your reference library, you should now see a new column displaying record numbers. Click on the Record # column label to sort your references by record number.
To sort by reference type, set the other Unused column to Reference Type.
