EndNote Online (formerly known as EndNote Web) allows you to create an EndNote Library online, which can be accessed from anywhere using the Internet. References can be transferred between your EndNote Online library and a regular "desktop" EndNote library, now called EndNote Desktop. You can insert citations into Word documents from your EndNote Online library in the same way as you do from the desktop version. EndNote Online is not as sophisticated as the desktop EndNote program and is meant to be used as an additional feature, rather than as a replacement.
Once your EndNote Online account is set up you can "sync" with an EndNote library on any desktop computer, or on your iPad (see below), and contents will be uploaded and/ or downloaded as appropriate. You must have at least EndNote X7 for the sync process to work properly, unless you registered an earlier version of EndNote before August 2014.
EndNote Online is (obviously) an online product so you will need to create an account, and log in each time you access it. This is free for UTS staff and students. The best way of doing this is to register using Web of Science. Use your UTS Webmail User ID and password to access Web of Science.
At the top of the Web of Science screen you will see the option EndNote, click this and then register (use your UTS email address, and choose a password). Once this process is complete you will be able to log in to EndNote Online.
Direct Export of journal article citations into EndNote Online is possible from ISI Web of Science and EBSCO databases but is not possible from most other databases (for example ProQuest), nor from Google Scholar. In those cases you should Direct Export first into a desktop EndNote library and then transfer them from there into EndNote Online.
- Click on the EndNote tab in Word and then on Preferences (on a Mac, click instead on Tools in the EndNote toolbar, then Cite While You Write Preferences).
- Choose the Application tab and use the drop down menu to select EndNote Web or EndNote Online.
- Enter in your EndNote Online email address and password details (they may already be there), then click on OK.
- To change back to regular EndNote, select EndNote from the drop down menu. EndNote Online uses a different set of referencing styles and these may take a little while to download. Harvard (UTS) style, APA, and AGLC styles are all available in EndNote Online.
- Online Tutorials: EndNote has a YouTube playlist of online tutorials for EndNote Online.
EndNote is also compatible with your iPad as a downloadable app (now free from iTunes). To use EndNote with your iPad you must create an EndNote Online account (as described above) and sign in. If you already have an account with EndNote, sign in with the same email and password. You will also need to purchase the app.
In order to sync your references with your iPad, touch the sync button. All of your references and custom groups will now appear. Please be aware if you have attached PDFs they will not be automatically attached unless they are favourites. However if you have previously attached the PDFs to the record, these will download once the record is opened.
To make a record a favourite, touch the heart button, this will mean that the PDF is attached to the record at all times.
If you wish to read these PDFs, touch on the record, then the attachment and touch view. You can also add annotations and highlight certain sections using the highlighter or pen tool.
Important Note: if you wish to use EndNote with Word documents you will still need to do this on the Desktop version of EndNote.
