Entering References into EndNote

A guide to help you get started with EndNote referencing.

General Notes

  • Enter human author's names as surname, first name. Eg: Walker, Jimmy
  • Enter additional author's names on new lines. Eg:
    Walker, Jimmy
    Sreesanth, Mary Jane
  • If you have only initials for an author's first names, enter these with a space between initials and without a full stop after the initials. Eg:
    Walker, J
    Sreesanth, M J
  • Place a comma at the end of a corporate author's name. Eg:
    Department of Finance,
  • If you don't have a date, enter this into the date field: n.d.
  • When dealing with online materials like websites, enter the date like this: 8 October 2013. Depending on the reference type you may put this information in one field or two. See the examples below for more information.
  • Enter multiple pages as first page-hyphen-last page. Eg: 10-11, 19-23
  • You don't need to enter titles in italics, or put article titles in inverted commas, or enter things like vol, iss or the triangle brackets around urls. EndNote will do all of this for you.
  • When entering book and article titles, use a capital letter for the first word and any proper nouns only. When entering journal titles, use capitalisation for all words except of, in, the, etc.
