Artist-in-Residence Timo Rissanen Public Lectures and Celebration

Timo Rissanen with a group of students

Timo Rissanen, UTS Library's 2017 Artist-in-Residence is an educator, artist and designer whose work centres on fashion, sustainability and communication. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate study at UTS, graduating with a PhD from the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building (DAB) in 2013. After graduating, Timo became a lecturer within the UTS Bachelor of Design (Fashion and Textiles). He was then approached by the Parsons School of Design New York to become the Assistant Professor of Fashion Design and Sustainability where he has been leading project on fashion and sustainability since 2010.

As the Artist-in-Residence, Timo's workspace and presence in the central stairwell of UTS Library for the past ten weeks has been surrounded by curiosity and intrigue. While quietly stitching, Timo has been interviewing UTS students and staff, asking them to consider relationships between people, time and the spaces and social contexts we inhabit. The final product will be a letter to Library users in the year 2117, the messages delivered to a speculative future.

"These conversations have reiterated for me that the future is a choice," says Timo. "The histories that will be told of our time, while subject to future revisionists, are a choice."

Public Lectures

Timo will be delivering a lecture offered twice detailing his residency and textile project in relation to sustainability, time and to nature, along with how his interest and formative ideas in these areas developed during his undergraduate and PhD studies within UTS Library. All are welcome to attend.
