A beautifully written description of the British class system and the poverty that the working class people lived in between WWI and WWII which opened my eyes to my own country. Words to the effect that a person was not from the upper class because he had to buy his own furniture - ie did not inherit it - have remained with me as one of those silent identifiers that exist in Britain.
