Art Spiegelman's critically claimed biography of his father, Vladek; published in two volumes, Maus traces Vladek Spiegelman's survival of the Holocaust with wit and compassion, and an eye for the tiny details. (Art Spiegelman cannot disguise, for example, his surprise that prisoners in Auschwitz were rationed cigarettes.) As much a story about Art and Vladek's relationship as it is a biography, Maus is skeptical about our ability to truly connect with each other as human beings, yet is powerfully empathetic.
