Getting EndNote [1]

The latest versions of EndNote at UTS are

  • EndNote X6.0.1 for Windows
  • EndNote X6.0.2 for Macintosh

They can be downloaded from this web page at no cost, ONLY to authorised members of the University of Technology, Sydney. If you already have a version of EndNote: do you need to upgrade? [2]

Off campus users can only download this file via the Library proxy server, which requires a valid UTS Webmail username and password to access. See Online Access [3].

Earlier versions of EndNote are also available.

The EndNote files are large (up to 90 MB). If you have a slow internet connection, UTS staff and students should download the EndNote installation file onto a USB from an on-campus computer and then transfer it from the USB to the desktop of your home computer.

Downloading EndNote for Windows

System and Word Processor Requirements:

  • EndNote X6 will work with the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Word 2010, or with Word 2007 or 2003.
  • Note that EndNote X3 and earlier versions will not work with Office 2010.
  • EndNote X6 will run on Windows XP (service pack 3), Vista (32/64 bit) or Windows 7 (32/64 bit).
  • EndNote's Support Site has more information on compatibility with word-processing software [4].
  • Installation of EndNote requires software capable of handling .zip format archives and also requires MSI installation - you will need the latest Windows updates installed to do this.

Instructions (please particularly note step 2):

  1. Click on EndNote_X601.zip [5] and then on the link of the same name on the next page (requires your login details). Save the file to your Desktop. The saved file will be called EndNote_X601.zip. If the file is saved to your Downloads folder, move it from there onto your Desktop.
  2. Right click on the downloaded zip folder and select Extract All ... (if you don't see this option, use Extract here (in new folder) instead. You may need to choose PeaZip to see this).
  3. Follow prompts and files will be extracted to a new folder called EndNote_X601 which should also be on your Desktop.
  4. Open this folder and double click on the ENX6Inst.msi file (this file can have a different name in earlier versions)
  5. Follow the prompts to install the configuration you require. If you are asked for a product key, this is because you have not properly extracted the file as instructed in steps 2 and 3 above. Make sure you are installing from the file in the extracted folder, not from the file of the same name in the zip folder you downloaded. You should not be asked for a product key. If you are asked, it means that you have not done step 2.
  6. After installation you can delete the two EndNote_X601 folders from your desktop.
  7. If you wish to use Harvard (UTS) referencing style with EndNote [6] you will need to download it also.
  8. Older versions of EndNote [7] are available if required.

Downloading EndNote for Macintosh

System and Word Processor Requirements
(to find your system version, go to the Apple menu in the Finder on your computer and choose About This Macintosh, or About This Computer)

  • EndNote X6 is recommended for use with OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
  • EndNote X5 or X6 are recommended for use with OS 10.7 (Lion) and Word 2011 or Pages '09 (Apple's word processing program).
  • If you have Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you can run EndNote back to version X1 according to EndNote's website, though EndNote X4 or later is recommended. EndNote X4 requires at least OS 10.5.6
  • EndNote X3 and earlier versions do not work with Word 2011. EndNote X4.0.2 (the updated version of X4) works with Word 2011.
  • EndNote X3 & X4 will work with Word 2008 and Pages '09. Word 2008 must be updated to at least Service Pack 1 - to verify this, open Word, go to the Word menu, and choose "About Word". The version listed must be 12.1.0 or higher. A free upgrade is available from Microsoft [8].
  • EndNote's Support Site has more information on compatibility with word processing software [4].
  • To extract the download file you will need to have Stuffit Expander installed on your Macintosh (this should already be installed).

Instructions:

  1. Click on the following link and download (save) the file EndNote X602 Site Installer.dmg [9] to your Desktop (requires your login details).
  2. If it saves instead into the Downloads folder, you should move it from there onto your desktop.
  3. Click on the downloaded file to create the EndNote Installer or Volume Installer.
  4. Then follow prompts. If you are asked to drag an EndNote folder, you will see an arrow pointing to a picture of your Applications folder. Drag the EndNote folder onto this picture. This starts the installation process.
  5. Once this is done, open your Applications folder. You'll see a folder labelled EndNote: open it and then click on the EndNote icon you'll see there. This will complete the installation process.
  6. Once EndNote is fully installed, the downloaded file and the installation set may be deleted.
  7. If you wish to use Harvard (UTS) referencing style with EndNote [6] you will need to download it also.
  8. After installing EndNote, if you cannot find your EndNote toolbar in Word, see this Answer [10].
  9. Older versions of EndNote [7] are available if required.
