UTS Library [4], in collaboration with Emerald Group Publishing Limited [5], held a free workshop 'The Insider's guide to getting published' on 10 November 2011, which provided advice, tips and ideas for getting published in a highly competitive research and publishing environment. Approx 80 researchers from different UTS faculties attended the seminar, some people joined the online chat to make comments.The workshop consisted of three sessions.
Session 1: An Insider’s Guide to Getting Published in International Journals
This session was delivered by Simon Linacre, who is a Senior Publisher at Emerald with nine years’ experience in business and management books and journals. He holds an MA in International Business, and has published academic articles on national research assessment exercises and the relationship between academic research and professional practice. Simon's presentation provided tips and techniques for getting published in journals, specifically, those of leading independent publisher Emerald. Topics included:
- How to get started
- How to target your work most effectively
- What editors and reviewers actually look for
- The essentials of a research paper in business and management
- Key questions that make or break a paper
- The secrets of revision
- Brief look at international publishing landscape
Session 2: Panel Discussion
- Dr John Chelliah [8] - UTS Business School -Why bother with publications? Dr John Chelliah is a lecturer in strategy, entrepreneurship and human resource management at the University of Technology, Sydney in Australia. He has a PhD from RMIT University, Melbourne. Prior to joining academia, he held senior management positions in several organisations located in the UK, USA, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia. He has published widely in reputable international management journals covering strategy, management consulting, human resource management, change management, international management, supply chain management and entrepreneurship. John also contributes to management education through delivering lectures as an invited speaker at business schools in Europe, Asia and the South Pacific.

Associate Professor Elaine Lally [9] - The elusive second book Elaine Lally researches and writes on digital culture and creative practices. Her PhD thesis was revised for publication in 2002 as a book, At Home with Computers [10], by international publisher Berg. She has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, and in 2011 is co-editor of The Art of Engagement: Culture, Collaboration, Innovation [11] (University of Western Australia Publishing).

Associate Professor Barry Jay [12]- Coping with rejection Associate Professor Barry Jay is a member of the School of Software at the University of Technology, Sydney. He obtained his BSc (Hons, pure mathematics) from the University of Sydney (1980) and his PhD (mathematics) from McGill University, Montreal (1984). He learned about computing as a senior research fellow at the Laboratory for the Foundations of Computer Science in Edinburgh before moving to UTS in 1993. His current research develops the pattern calculus and its implications for programming in his language bondi, as set out in his recent Springer monograph Pattern Calculus: Computing with Functions and Structures. [13]
Session 3: Open Access Publishing
Janet Chelliah on behalf of eScholarship [14] Team at UTS Library introduced the alternative publishing method - Open access (OA), [15] which has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. Three guest speakers provided unique and compelling insight from Open Acess journals published at UTSePress [16].
