How do I improve my academic writing?

  1. Write
  2. Write more.
  3. Write even more.
  4. Write even more than that.
  5. Write when you don't want to.
  6. Write when you do.
  7. Write when you have something to say.
  8. Write when you don't.
  9. Write every day.
  10. Keep writing.
I would add a few more tips:
  • Read more! Reading and writing are closely linked, so read more examples of academic writing and pay attention to the structure, vocabulary and style of other authors.
  • Library offers many books about how to improve your academic writing [10]
  • Most faculties at UTS offer their own guide to writing assignments. These lay out the ground rules for academic writing so they're essential reading!
  • HELPS [11]offers writing skills workshops, writing clinics and individual consultations
  • Research students can join the library's writing club Shut Up and Write [12]
