How do I change a style to order multiple in-text citations by date, rather than by author surname?

First make sure with your lecturer or supervisor that it acceptable to make this change to the style.

  • Select the reference style in your EndNote library, and then click on Edit, Output Styles, Edit "[your style]". This opens the Edit Style window.
  • Select Citations - Sort Order.
  • To get the style to order multiple in-text citations by Date, select Year + Author as the Citation Sort Order.
  • To get the style to leave multiple in-text citations in the order they were inserted, select Don't Sort as the Citation Sort Order.
  • Close the Edit Style window and save changes.
