When I reference an online report that has three authors in Endnote the final reference looks correct, but in text it only cites the first author. Is this correct? e.g. authors are Davies, Fidler & Gorbis but in text appears as Davies 2011

Hi Sallie-Anne

Well if you are using the Harvard UTS Style then no, that isn't exactly right - it should say (Davies, Fidler & Gorbis 2011) - if there are 4 or more authors it should say (Davies et. al. 2011).

If you are using Harvard UTS - go into EndNote and choose - edit/output styles/edit Harvard UTS

Then, choose citations>author lists on the left of page and take a look at what is written there. What should make your reference work is the following writing in the top box marked 'author separators'

You want it to read like this

Number of authors from [1] to [100] between [,] before last [&], before last in format author (year) [&]

It should read like that already... but I guess if you are in Harvard UTS and it's not working its worth confirming that. If you can't get it to work and are in the library do come down to the desk or you can call the desk on 95143095. If you have continued problems try Patrick Tooth on 95143318.

Thanks!

Dear David,

It does read like that - so I'll remove it and have one more go.  If no success, I'll bring it in.

Thanks,

Hi Sallie-Anne

the other possibility is that you have typed all your authors in one line in EndNote. EndNote gets confused by this and thinks it's one person with a very weird name.

In the reference in your EndNote library, each author needs to be on a separate line in the author field.

Just type each author in as Surname, First names or Surname, Initials

one underneath each other, in the order given on the paper. No other punctuation is necessary; EndNote will know how to deal with lots of authors.

Hope this helps

Patrick
