Referencing a Journal Entry

When referencing a journal, is it essential to include the volume number? I am using an online excerpt of a print journal, and either they have not provided a volume number or there is none. Am I able to skip the volume number in my referencing, or do I have to contact the publishers of the journal and request a volume number? Thank you for your help

Hi Rojda,

Interesting question! The first thing I'd advise you to do is go online and see if you can find a volume number for this article, as it's rather unusual for the journal to not have one. You could try putting the reference details into Google Scholar, or look up the journal's homepage online. If you exhaust all possibilities for tracking down this information, you can leave the volume number out, but it would be advisable for you to try hard to establish the volume number before doing that. No need to really contact the publisher though, there should be an easier way.
