How to reference original artworks

How do you correctly reference an original image or artwork? This article says that ordinarily you would not be referencing the original artwork, but what if you ARE referencing the original? What if the artwork doesn't appear in a book or online?

Hi Marielle,

I guess this reference list example might come close to matching your situation:

Artist Year, Title, Type of Work, Museum or Gallery, City. Example:

Rodin, A. 1886, The lovers, sculpture, private collection.

.. As you can see in this example the artwork is in a private place... but you can still describe the artist, the year, the title and the type of work. For the in text reference you'd just list the artist and the year.

Hope this helps, let me know if not
