How do you reference a quote or reference in a text?

If you're reading a text, such as a textbook or academic journal, and they quote or reference another text, how do you reference this? Do you just reference the original text/author, or do you reference the text you found it in?

Hi there,

You only ever cite what you see, and in this case you're seeing the book or journal article in front of you. So you cite the text you found it in. However, you could choose to note the original author in the text of your essay. So that, if Brian cites Anders, you could write:

In 2008, Anders observed the increased antagonism within recurring prison escapees (Brian 2010)

Your reference list would simply be Brian.
