Endnote sync and maintaing smart groups

I would like to sync my Endnote x7 library and have seen that this is possible via Endnote Web. However, it seems that smart groups don't sync.

How best to set up a syncing Endnote library for use between Uni mac and home Pc so that it displays same smart groups, group set and  organisational structure? I've +1000 references so I've got to keep it organised and can't have items turning up "unfiled"

If Endnote web isn't the answer, is there a workaround? (for example- saving the pdf files on dropbox and perhaps duplicating the library?)

Hi Sarah

Yes, you can sync your EndNote library between a Mac and PC via EndNote Web. How do you get your smart group displaying the same in the different computers' EndNote library? The thing you need to do is just creating the same amart group (using the same search strategy) in your EndNote Library within the Mac and PC. Then all will be the same after sync.

Hope this helps.

Thanks- but just to clarify - do the Groups (normal not smart) and Group Sets Sync?

and if I make an adjustment to the smart group on one computer - does this sync or I have to manually make the change on both computers?

Hi Sarah,

My and Patrick's take on this is that smart groups - while not portable to EndNote Web, will still synch in a way - say you get a bunch of articles in EndNote web and you are synched to your home computer - any articles coming down from EndNote web will appear in your smart group automatically - as that is the nature of the smart group. Ditto for two desktop computers, so long as you have set up the smart group on both. I hope that isn't completely nonsensical. Do contact me if you'd like a more cogent explanation.

Hi Sarah

Another option is saving your EndNote library in an USB, then you can use your EndNote library in different computers.

My colleague Natalya is keeping her EndNote library in Drobox, and also EndNote library can be used anywhere. But be sure Don't Open Dropbox and Endnote at the same time, otherwise EndNote will be corrupted. She sugguests "prevent corruption by turning off dropbox synching whenever you are using endnote ('pause synching' option in the dropdown menu from the dropbox icon at the bottom of your screen).  DONT FORGET to restart synching and allow the endnote library to upload before you close your machine!"

Cheers
