Journal Database Alerts

Setting up table of contents, alerts in Library databases and RSS feeds

A journal database alert can email you the table of contents for the latest issues of your favourite journals as soon as they are published, enabling you to keep up to date with the most recent articles. Or an alert can regularly rerun your favourite database searches automatically, and email any new search results to you. Below is a list of selected databases with brief instructions on how to set up a personal profile and how to create alerts.

RSS Feeds are another means of alerting you to new developments. To use them you need an RSS feed-reader or aggregator (Google Reader is a good one and recent versions of most web browsers include an RSS aggregator).

A useful way of setting up a table of contents alert as a RSS feed uses Google Reader and a website called ticTOCS. This works for most journals and does not require access to any databases.

  1. First set up an account on Gmail if you have don't have one at Google Accounts. This allows you to access Google Reader.
Note: This method works with any RSS reader if you prefer a different one.
  2. Go to the ticTOCS website and click on the link Let's get started!
  3. In the left column, search for your journal either by its Title, or by searching for all journals in a particular subject area or from a particular publisher.
  4. Click on the title link of your journal in the left column and you will then see its table of contents displayed in the central column of ticTOCS.

  5. Click on Export feed to... and select Google. (You may select a different reader if you prefer.)
  6. Click on Add to Google Reader.  You will need to Sign in to Google if you are not already logged in.
  7. Your RSS feed is now added to Google Reader and will be regularly updated, automatically.
  8. To set up another alert, return to ticTOCs and repeat steps 3-6 above.
