Curriculum Collection Resources: Children's Books

In this guide:

There are certain phrases that are used in the library catalogue to describe different types of children's books. These are:

  • Juvenile fiction = fiction books
  • Juvenile literature = non-fiction books
  • Pictorial works = picture books

You can use a combination of these phrases and other keywords to search for children's books in the library catalogue. Below we show you some of the most common searches.

Picture Books

Picture books are identified by the letter P at the start of their call number.

To find Picture Books:

  1. On the right-hand side of the search bar, select Library Catalogue from the drop down options
  2. Enter the search: "Pictorial works" ("Juvenile literature" OR "Juvenile fiction")
Hint: If you are looking for picture books on a specific topic, add keywords on that topic to your picture book search (e.g. search for "Pictorial works" ("Juvenile literature" OR "Juvenile fiction") Space)

N.B. Non-fiction picture books don't have a P prefix in the call number. You will need to use your intuition to figure out if it's a picture book (Hint: look at the title).

In our example image, A is for Art has the call number 750 THUR because it is a book about a topic (art) instead of being a storybook. You can tell by the title that it's a children's book.

Fiction Books

There are two categories of fiction books in the Curriculum Collection:

  • Junior Fiction - identified by the letters JF at the start of the item call number
  • Young Adult Fiction - identified by the letters YA at the start of the item call number

To find Fiction Books:

  1. On the right-hand side of the search bar, select Library Catalogue from the drop-down options
  2. Enter the search: "Juvenile fiction" in the search bar
  3. Add extra keywords on a topic of your choice (in the below example we have added the keyword 'fish')
