31266 Introduction to Information Systems: Finding information online

In this guide:

Finding reliable information on the internet

We all use Google, but when you're looking for information on the internet, it's important to check that your information is legit, and not the work of someone that is looking to spread misinformation.

The internet is useful for finding information like:

  • Fact sheets
  • Open data
  • Government policies
  • Guidelines and procedures
  • Reference information

It will save you time and effort if you use these sneaky Google tricks:

  • At the end of your search, type site: and then the URL or type of domain that you are interested in. For example, if you search information technology site:.abs.gov.au , you will only get results back from the Australian Bureau of Statistics that are about information technology.
  • If you only want to see a certain type of document, at the end of your search, add type: and then the file extension, for example the internet of things type:.pdf will only bring back results that are PDF documents.
