The Library's exhibition program regularly showcases work from Global Studio students, which encompass design and architecture disciplines. These immersive Global Studio programs give UTS students the opportunity to participate in cross-cultural learning exchanges with teachers, students and industries around the world.

For this Global Studio, students were interviewed and selected for two very different programs according to their interest and design strengths. While in India, each student group worked closely with local artisans and returned back with a deep appreciation of the extraordinary knowledge the artisans so generously shared.

Based in the Himalayas, the Kullu Karishma Weave Studio offered the first student group the opportunity to learn the value of spinning, weaving, knitting and natural dye processes, which have been practiced for centuries in these mountains. UTS has set up a sponsorship with Karishma where an Honours year student works directly with the studio to produce contemporary weaves for their final year collection.

The second group of students traveled to Bangalore to work with an internationally recognized woodblock studio known as Tharangini Prints. Here they explored a variety of techniques focusing on organic, eco-friendly colours and sustainable print processes. In addition, traditional hand embroidery techniques were explored at the Calantha Fashion Studio.

Throughout the program, the UTS students undertook a process of observation and reflection, which would guide the development of their final designs. On exhibition are the woven and woodblock printed samples produced by the students demonstrating the application of ancient artisan techniques applied in contemporary practice.

UTS Library curates a series of exhibitions each year that showcase works produced by UTS students and staff. The Library is a point at which the entire University connects and these exhibitions create opportunities for cross-disciplinary encounters, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, ideas and research between academic groups and faculties.
