Competition: It's Lights Out for the Reef

Earth Hour

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's most stunning natural wonders, but faces destruction from the effects of climate change.

In the past 30 years, 50.7% of the coral in the reef has died.

The effects of climate change on the reef include coral bleaching, an increased number of severe storms, and ocean acidification. Other man-made threats that impact the reef include pollutant discharge from land, coastal development, and damage from fishing.

Estimates suggest that the amount of coral left could be as low as 5% in 20 years.

Earth Hour 2014 aims to increase awareness of the grim reality facing one of Australia's most beautiful and iconic places. At 8:30pm on Saturday 29 March, we turn off our lights to remind the world that it's lights out for the reef if we don't stand up to protect it.

Competition: Show your support for Earth Hour this year by contributing to our blackboard mural of the Great Barrier Reef on Level 2 of the City Campus Library. Take a photo of yourself next to it and you could win 1 of 4 x $25 JB HiFi gift cards. A winner will be announced weekly throughout the month of March. Simply upload your photo to Instagram using #utslibrary and #iheartthereef to qualify.
