Blown across the world, they are air-wrecked on a remote desert island and eventually construct a sophisticated society in miniature. The book is also an intriguing mystery story, for the island has a secret. Jules Verne (1828-1905) is a master of adventure writing, episodes in the TV series "Lost" contain references to this novel and it also inspired the creator of the video game "Myst"

This #1 New York Times Bestseller was adapted into the blockbuster film directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993. Jurassic Park can be read as a thought-provoking fable about the impacts of technology and the hazards of bioengineering. 

Study in SableA Study in Sable by Mercedes Lackey 
One of the Elemental Masters series reimagines Sherlock Holmes in a richly-detailed alternate 20th century England. Series protagonists Nan and Sarah have returned, after being tested by the great detective himself, the pair set out to work with John and Mary Watson, making particular use of Nan's psychic abilities to solve the case of a missing girl.
