Getting EndNote

The latest versions of EndNote at UTS are

  • EndNote X7 for Windows
  • EndNote X7 for Macintosh

They can be downloaded from this web page at no cost, ONLY to authorised members of the University of Technology, Sydney. If you already have a version of EndNote: do you need to upgrade?

Off campus users can only download this file via the Library proxy server, which requires a valid UTS Webmail username and password to access.

Earlier versions of EndNote are also available.

The EndNote files are large (up to 90 MB). If you have a slow internet connection, UTS staff and students should download the EndNote installation file onto a USB from an on-campus computer and then transfer it from the USB to the desktop of your home computer.

Downloading EndNote for Windows

System and Word Processor Requirements:

  • EndNote X7 will work with the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Word 2013 and 2010, or with Word 2007 (but not Word 2003).
  • EndNote X7 will run on Windows XP (service pack 3), Vista (32/64 bit), Windows 7 (32/64 bit) or Windows 8 (32/64 bit).
  • Note that EndNote X6, X5, X4 will not work with Word 2013 (only Word 2010, 2007 or 2003); and EndNote X3 and X2 need Word 2007 or Word 2003.
  • EndNote's Support Site has more information on compatibility with word-processing software.
  • Installation of EndNote requires software capable of handling .zip format archives and also requires MSI installation - you will need the latest Windows updates installed to do this.

Instructions (please particularly note step 2):

  1. Click on EndNote_X7.zipYou'll be asked for your UTS login details, and then taken to the downloading site. Click on the link that you see there of this name and save the file to your Desktop (in some browsers such as Chrome the file is automatically saved to your Downloads folder, this is OK). The saved file will be called EndNote_X7.zip
  2. Right click on the downloaded zip folder and select Extract All ... (if you don't see this option, use Extract here (in new folder) instead. You may need to choose PeaZip to see this).
  3. Follow prompts and files will be extracted to a new folder called EndNote_X7.
  4. Open this folder and double click on the ENX7Inst.msi file (this file can have a different name in earlier versions)
  5. Follow the prompts to install the configuration you require. If you are asked for a product key, this is because you have not properly extracted the file as instructed in steps 2 and 3 above. Make sure you are installing from the file in the extracted folder, not from the file of the same name in the zip folder you downloaded. You should not be asked for a product key. If you are asked, it means that you have not done step 2.
  6. After installation you can delete the two EndNote_X7 folders from your desktop.
  7. If you wish to use Harvard (UTS) referencing style with EndNote you will need to download it also.
  8. Older versions of EndNote are available if required. You'll see numbered folders for the different versions of EndNote, 10=X, 11=X1, 12=X2 etc. Pick the version you want. Each folder contains options for both Windows and Mac. Choose Windows and then click on the .zip link to download and save the installation file (a good place to save it is to your desktop).
  9. At the time of writing (April 2014) there is an EndNote X7.1 updater that can also be downloaded and installed, after you have installed EndNote X7. You will see the updater file in the same folder as the original installation file in step 1. This is optional, but recommended.

Downloading EndNote for Macintosh

System and Word Processor Requirements
(to find your system version, go to the Apple menu in the Finder on your computer and choose About This Macintosh, or About This Computer)

  • EndNote X7 will work with all recent versions of Mac OS (ie 10.6 or later) and Word for Mac. Users of Pages (Apple's word processing program) should use either Pages 5.2 or Pages '09. More information about Pages can be found on EndNote's system requirements page.
  • EndNote X7 or X6.0.2 are recommended for use with OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
  • EndNote's Support Site has more information on compatibility with word processing software.
  • To extract the download file you will need to have Stuffit Expander installed on your Macintosh (this should already be installed).

Instructions:

  1. Click on EndNote X7 Site Installer.dmg. You'll be asked for your UTS login details, and then taken to the downloading site. Click on the link that you see there of this name and save the file to your Desktop.
  2. If it saves instead into the Downloads folder, you should move it from there onto your Desktop.
  3. Click on the downloaded file and then follow prompts. If you are asked to drag an EndNote folder, you will see an arrow pointing to a picture of your Applications folder. Drag the EndNote folder onto this picture. This starts the first part of the installation process.
  4. You should not be asked for a product key. If you get asked for a product key, there was probably a problem with the downloading process. The easiest thing to do is cancel the installation process, delete the downloaded file, and start again (from step 1 above). If the problem still occurs, contact the Library.
  5. Once the first part of the installation process is done, open your Applications folder. You'll see a folder labelled EndNote: open it and then click on the EndNote icon you'll see there. This will complete the installation process.
  6. Once EndNote is fully installed, the downloaded .dmg file may be deleted.
  7. If you wish to use Harvard (UTS) referencing style with EndNote you will need to download it also.
  8. After installing EndNote, if you cannot find your EndNote toolbar in Word, see this Answer.
  9. Older versions of EndNote are available if required. You'll see numbered folders for the different versions of EndNote, 10=X, 11=X1, 12=X2 etc. Pick the version you want. Each folder contains options for both Windows and Mac. Choose Mac and then click on the site installer link to download and save the installation file (a good place to save it is to your desktop).
  10. At the time of writing (April 2014) there is an EndNote X7.1 updater that can also be downloaded and installed, after you have installed EndNote X7. You will see the updater file in the same folder as the original installation file in step 1. This is optional, but recommended.
