When you’re on campus, you’re sharing space with people who have different lived experiences, who see the world differently and who use the space in different ways. This can sometimes bring about challenges in reading each other and communicating. And when studying, sometimes what you think is appropriate may not be the same for the person next to you.
This is where “being a unicorn” comes in. We’re all unique and being a little more self-aware of everyday behaviours ensures everyone feels welcome. Across the Library, you’ll start to see our unicorn mascot popping up in posters, signage and social media, modelling small, everyday respectful behaviours including:
- Being kind to others in small ways, including returning an item.
- Speaking up kindly when something isn’t right (including overhearing loud groups in quiet spaces) and having the generosity to listen when someone does the same to you.
- Being mindful of how much space you’re taking up, including leaving room for others and cleaning up after yourself.
- Being self-aware when entering a new space, adjusting your noise levels to match the noise rules of the space.
These moments came directly from conversations with students and staff, who shared how different expectations around study spaces can sometimes lead to friction or discomfort. We heard that what feels “normal” or reasonable to one person doesn’t always feel the same to someone else—especially in busy, shared environments like the Library.
The “Be a unicorn” campaign is a gentle reminder that a little self‑awareness and kindness can go a long way.
The “Be a unicorn” artwork was created by Angelina Yap, a Sydney‑based illustrator and animator working on Gadigal Country. A UTS Visual Communication alum, Angelina brings a playful and caring approach to their work. When they’re not creating, you’ll find them enjoying other people’s creations—or having a well‑deserved nap.
